Securing Knowledge Protecting Rights

Governance systems that enable communities to own, control, and benefit from their traditional knowledge on their own terms, within any international framework.

Our Initiatives

Traditional Knowledge Documentation & Governance

Supporting Indigenous peoples and local communities to document their traditional knowledge and biological heritage, establish community-controlled governance systems, and exercise their rights as knowledge holders under applicable international frameworks.

Rights Representation & Policy Interface

Ensuring that the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples and local communities are represented within international biodiversity, intellectual property, and marine governance processes and that community-level governance systems are recognised within multilateral benefit-sharing mechanisms.

Access, Benefit-Sharing & Knowledge Economy

Building the compliance frameworks, mutually agreed terms, and benefit-sharing arrangements through which research institutions, commercial actors, and development organisations can engage responsibly with traditional knowledge and associated genetic resources — and through which communities share equitably in the value their knowledge creates.

Mission:

To support Indigenous peoples and local communities in establishing governance over their traditional knowledge and associated genetic resources enabling the exercise of rights under applicable national and international frameworks, meaningful participation in access and benefit-sharing arrangements, and equitable sharing of benefits in forms communities determine.

Vision:

A world in which every community that holds knowledge of its natural heritage has the governance systems, legal standing, and institutional support to benefit from that knowledge equitably across generations.

OUR IMPACT

Communities worldwide steward critical ecosystems and hold valuable knowledge for climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. ICRI Global creates pathways to unlock this potential, building capacity where communities lead, youth gain meaningful careers, and partnerships deliver mutual benefits.

What We Do

Knowledge documentation

Supporting communities to record and organise their knowledge in systems they control accessible offline, maintained locally, and structured to meet international standards for rights documentation.

Rights governance

Establishing consent processes and legal frameworks that make community rights over their knowledge enforceable within national and international contexts.

Benefit-sharing systems

Designing arrangements through which communities share in the value their knowledge creates in forms and on terms they determine.

Institutional compliance support

Providing the documentation and due diligence frameworks that research institutions, companies, and development actors require to engage with community knowledge responsibly and in accordance with applicable standards.

Policy interface

Ensuring community governance systems are visible within international benefit-sharing mechanisms so that communities are recognised participants, not silent sources.
